Biography
I grew up in the town of Langley, Washington, USA, on beautiful Whidbey Island, and left to pursue my B.S. in ÀË»¨Ö±²¥ from Caltech in 2006 and my Ph.D. from University of California, San Diego, in 2011.
I then moved across the Atlantic to become a Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow under the guidance of Wolfgang Lubitz at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany. I started my independent career in 2013 at The Ohio State University, where I was promoted to Associate Professor in 2019 and Professor in 2022. In 2023, I moved to UCLA.
My research interests center around bioinorganic chemistry. My research program emphasizes the study of small molecule activation reactions in metalloenzymes and their models, with applications to energy, environment, and human health. Our toolbox for understanding these processes includes an array of magnetic resonance techniques, such as pulsed EPR spectroscopy, vibrational spectroscopy, protein engineering, bioanalytical methods, and electronic structure analyses.
In recognition and support of my group’s research, I was awarded the NSF CAREER award in 2015 and the DOE Early Career award in 2017, along with the Sloan Fellowship in 2018.
